San Antonio woman killed in 14-story fall

SAN ANTONIO -- The 14-story fall that killed an Army doctor this week was an accident that occurred after the woman went out on her narrow window ledge to get her husband's attention, according to police.

Linda Steele Tate, 47, had been drinking and talking about money with her husband Duane early Wednesday night when she crawled out a small window of their apartment in the Majestic Tower downtown, police say.

She lost her footing outside and fell, landing on the Majestic Theatre's street-level marquee. One of her arms was severed by the impact and dropped into a traffic lane on busy Houston Street.

Police initially thought Tate's death may have been a suicide, but revised that theory after their investigation.

Duane Tate, 50, was the opposite side of the room when his wife went out the window and he could not reach her before she fell, police say.

The couple had been married for about three months.

I worked with Linda for three years and 6 months at the bookstore. She was the manager for our cafe. For a long time, she had a drinking problem, but I and her other coworkers all believed she'd stopped drinking a year before she met to soon to be husband. Linda somewhat believed we managed to curse her love life. Whenever she would have a boyfriend, she would tell all those around her about it. And then it would end. We didn't know she was getting married until she came in with this huge ring on her finger and a bigger smile on her face. Linda was a very fun loving person and loved jokes. Even when the joke was on her. She was enthusiastic and charming to everyone around her. She was willing to be anyone's smoking partner, whether the weather was cooperating or not. A week before her death, she called up to the store simply to talk to her old coworkers and have a laugh on the phone. That's what everyone kept saying when we had heard she died. "I just talked to her last week. That was it. Just last week." She was a very nice person. A good coworker. An intellectual who could easily flow from one topic to the next. She will be missed.
